Yorktown High School Theatre Arts students went to NYC to see "Wicked" at the Gershwin Theatre over the November 16 weekend!
For those of you who haven't seen this performance, Wicked first debuted in 2003 as a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The original Broadway production won multiple Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award.
The musical a loose adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which was inspired by L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its famous Hollywood 1939 film staring Judy Garland as Dorothy.
Wicked is told from the perspective of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, before and after Dorothy's arrival in Oz. The 21st century musical has become so popular that Hollywood is releasing a new film adaptation set to be released on November 22 of this year!
In addition to the matinee performance, YHS Theatre Arts had a talkback (that's where performers come out to discuss elements of the show/work with you) with two wonderful performers and an assistant Company Manager.
What an amazing experience to go to the Gershwin Theatre, located just off Broadway, in the heart of New York's Theater District!
Yorktown students got to ask principal performers about their practices and preparations. It was a totally SWANKIFIED day!
